Friendly Reminder: Precautions for Shutting Down Machine Tools During the Spring Festival Holiday

Machine tool maintenance before the holiday

1. Cleanup

1. Iron Chip Cleanup (Iron chips left unattended for too long can easily rust and clump together, significantly affecting the expansion and contraction cover of the chip conveyor.)

(1) Inside the machine tool

(2) Inside the T-slot of the workbench

(3) Chip Conveyor

(4) Chip Collector

(5) Extendable shield opens for internal cleaning

(6) Tank Interior Cleaning

1.2、Cleaning of Each Filter Mesh

(1) Electrical cabinet air conditioner, heat exchanger filter mesh

(2) Oil Cooler Filter Mesh

(3) Hydraulic Station Heat Sink

(4) Guide Rail Oil Filler Filter

2. Rust Prevention

(1) Workbench surface

(2) Telescopic shield with surface oiling

(3) Lubricate the inside and cross-section of the spindle taper bore (remember not to clean the spindle with an air gun, as this could allow contaminants to enter the bearing).

(4) Counterweight chains, sprockets (clean and grease them)

(5) Chain-type chip conveyor drive chain

(6) Rust Prevention for Each Tooling

3. Cutting Fluid Treatment

(1) It is recommended to drain the cutting fluid (water-soluble) and thoroughly clean the tank. (Water-soluble cutting fluids can spoil and deteriorate if left for extended periods.)

(2) Typically, water-soluble cutting fluids are aerobic; however, if air is excluded or oil contaminants form a layer on the surface of the fluid, it can lead to spoilage and degradation of the cutting fluid.

(3) Cutting fluids can pollute the environment—please avoid direct discharge.

4. Air Source Section

(1) Drain moisture from equipment such as gas storage tanks, refrigerant dryers, desiccant dryers, and cyclone water separators. Also, empty any accumulated moisture from the filter cartridges on the machine tool. Then, repeatedly activate the air functions on the machine tool—such as loosening and clamping the tool, performing air blasts during machining, or cycling the tool holder up and down—or activating the four-axis clamping mechanism—to thoroughly remove moisture from all components and piping systems.

(2) Moisture in the air supply can significantly damage pneumatic components of machine tools, such as spindles, grating scales, tool-changing cylinders, air cylinders, and solenoid valves. In particular, if the spindle fails, repairs can take a long time and incur high costs. Yet, many customers fail to prioritize this issue, hoping for improvements in the air supply system down the line. Meanwhile, some customers have already installed drying equipment, but due to long pipeline lengths and infrequent drainage practices, moisture still remains present in the air supply.

5. Guide Rail Oil Section

(1) Check the bottom of the lubrication pump for any impurities or layering. If either is present, drain the oil and thoroughly clean both the interior and the oil suction filter screen.

(2) For lubrication, it is recommended to use genuine rail oil—absolutely avoid using recycled oil. (Recommended: Mobil 68# Rail Oil)

(3) Manually pump the oil several times and move the three-axis system through its full travel range multiple times, ensuring that the guide rail oil evenly coats the screw, guide rails, and other components.

(4) Preparations Before Shutting Down

(5) Move the three axes to their middle positions, record the current mechanical coordinates of the three axes, or take photos and document the values in coordinate systems like G54/55. This prevents the loss of the machine's origin point—or the inability to locate it—when the machine is powered on again next year due to battery voltage issues.

Please check before powering on after the holiday.

Power-on steps:

(1) First, turn on the gas supply.

(2) Once the air pressure stabilizes, turn on the equipment.

(3) Manually pump the oil several times

(4) Press the emergency stop button immediately, then check the monitor for any alarms—especially those indicating low battery voltage or loss of the machine's origin point. (If such issues occur, refer to the machine coordinates recorded before shutting down at year-end. Manually move all three axes toward the origin using the handwheel, noting the exact values. After replacing the battery, recalibrate the origin point accordingly.)

(5) Other Function Checks

(6) Remember to warm up the machine before processing.
